Different Types of Dentures
When people think of dentures, they instantly think of full-mouth dentures that are easily removable. These are a type of denture that is common, but it’s not the only one! There are many different types, each one providing different benefits to the patient depending on their specific treatment plan and goals.
Full Dentures As mentioned above, these replace all of the teeth at the top and bottom of the mouth.
Partial Dentures
These replace one or more missing teeth and are attached to a metal framework that clips onto natural teeth.
Overdentures
These are similar to partial dentures but fit over existing natural teeth or dental implants while also replacing missing teeth.
Implant-Supported Dentures
These are attached to dental implants and can provide a more stable fit. They’re not removable except by your dentist.
How to Properly Clean Dentures
It’s important to clean your dentures thoroughly and properly to maintain their appearance and lifespan and reduce bacteria in your mouth. Here are tips we recommend when it comes to cleaning and maintaining your removable dentures whether you have full dentures, partial dentures, or overdentures.
After eating, remove your dentures and rinse them under cool or warm water to remove any food particles. Do NOT use hot water as this can warp them.
Brush your dentures with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Do NOT use a hard-bristled brush as this can scratch the material.
Soak your dentures overnight in warm water and a denture cleaner that you can buy at any drugstore or grocery store. This helps remove bacteria and tough stains. Rinse them off before putting them back in your mouth.
Brush your gums and tongue to remove any excess bacteria or food particles. This will prevent gum disease and also prevent staining your dentures.
When you’re not wearing your dentures, either keep them in a bowl overnight soaking in a denture cleaner or in protective cases to prevent them from getting damaged. Do NOT just leave them sitting out as this can dry them out or cause warping.
Book regular dental checkups so we can ensure your mouth stays clean and healthy, and that your dentures fit correctly. Ill-fitting dentures can cause many issues and should be dealt with promptly.
Be Mindful of What You’re Eating to Extend the Lifespan of Your Dentures
It can be challenging to eat certain foods with dentures, especially if they’re really hard and sticky. It’s best to avoid (or at least limit) your consumption of sticky or gummy foods, hard candies, foods or drinks that are really hot or really cold, or foods with small pieces that can easily get stuck in or between your dentures such as popcorn, gum, nuts, corn, etc. If these foods are consumed, make sure you thoroughly rinse and clean your dentures, gums and tongue. Remember, dentures do not prevent you from gum disease.
Are You Experiencing Issues With Your Dentures?
If you’re experiencing the following issues, you should seek denture repair services immediately:
Cracked or fractured denture
Loose or ill-fitting denture
Missing or damaged false tooth
Discolouration or staining
It’s important to seek denture repair as soon as you notice these changes so you can avoid further damage to the denture or your mouth. Seeking repair as soon as possible can also help preserve its function and restore your oral health.
